Where are they now?

The wonders of Facebook and the internet allow us to stalk Monoposto luminaries. If the pictures are not for publication, please contact us.

Jim Timms was out in his Brabham BT21 at Charade in France. Two 3rds and being called Jeeem Teeems by the commentator were his reward.   Jim Blockley, meanwhile, was qualifying strongly at Silverstone in his BT21 when we understand there was a problem after 3 laps. Commiserations, Jim. Pic - Amy Louise Goff.
The same excellent report in which Jim Timms appeared, rightly referred to Jeremy Bennett as "a distinguished engineer". Though not a fashion icon, surprisingly. Photos - Rob Faloon/1000ccF3   Jeremy "I've got an RT3 in this box" Goodman recently debuted this lovely F3-trim RT3 at Silverstone, and subsequent raced at the historic F3 races at Spa, same time as Mono.

Dornier 17

The raising of a WW2 Dornier Do17 from the Goodwin Sands is not, in itself, a Mono news item. However, an occassional Startline contributor asked how various Mono and other personalities would react. We suggest as follows (with apologies and no malice whatsoever):

Dermot Healey:

"Pre-enjoyed craft, comes with crustacean addition at no extra charge. Requires light recommissioning. One or two parts missing. Would look good behind the Bentley tow car I happen to have in stock. Do not ask for pictures, unless of the crustaceans."
Driftwood "I have a tail and starboard wing to suit a Dornier Do17,217, or 328. Call for details"
Avit "I'll get me welding gear."
Kevin Mason "It will be ready and flying at Oulton. This Wellington Bomber back end should be just the job to fix it."
Alastair Poulter "I'll need to check the ground clearance on that. And the wings look a bit wide."
Matt Walters / Peter Bassill "Does anybody have a workshop manual or some drawings?"
A now retired 1600 Competitor "I can only aspire to that standard of preparation"
Simon Davey "Will you swap it for my Van Diemen?"
Geoff Fern "It'll look better when it's sprayed black with Team Fern down the side"
Tony Bishop / Richard Purcell "Where did I put those 5 airworthy Mosquitos?"
Posh auction company in MotorSport Mag "An important and unique barn find with matching numbers and a continuous history. Welcome at Goodwood. This machine has been stored rain-free for over 70 years."
David Parkinson "Is there any cake inside it?"

F1 Aerodynamics

The Royal Aeronautical Society present lectures on various aeronautical subjects. In 2012 their prestigious Frederick Lanchester lecture was given by former Benneton and Ferrari, and now Sauber, aerodynamicist Willem Toet. Willem is also a hillclimber, over the years in a Mini, a Peugeot, and Pilbeam single seaters, ending with an Indy car turbocharged version..

The lecture is available in a podcast or to listen to "live" from this link, with thanks to RAeS Unfortunately the sound quality leaves much to be desired, but it isn't often you can listen to a leading F1 aero man. It's previously been linked by some proper websites, but it was new to me.

How much is a spark plug for one of these?

In the case of some Mono cars - the FVJ 8v for instance - the answer is that the spark plug is from a road car (N9Y since you ask) and between £1.80 and £2.50 a plug. However, we were told recently that the owner of an interesting F3 engine tried to buy a new set of plugs - and was quoted 600 Euros.
