Jim Timms at Monaco

There can be little doubt that of all the world's race circuits, Spa may be the finest driver's circuit, but far and away the most charismatic is Monaco. It must also be the most difficult to be allowed to drive. The F1 circus includes some support acts, but none are for the clubman, and the Historic Grand Prix, held every 2 years, a fortnight before the F1 race, is selectve to say the least. None of this put off Jim Timms, Mono 1600 stalwart and Haulier extraordinary.

Jim decided he wanted to do Monaco some years ago, so took up historic racing, in a 1000cc screamer F3 Brabham BT21. Lats year, aged 77, he came 4th overall in the highly competitive European Championship. However, the Monegasques changed the rules and the BT21 was no longer the car to have so he acquired a 1978 Ralt RT1 Toyota F3 from Italy. Jim rather modestly told The Gloucetershire Echo "“I am getting on in life and this is my last chance to race at Monaco, which is the ultimate circuit in all of motorsport. I had to go through an ECG, which wasn’t up to standard so I had to have a heart scan to obtain the licence needed to race in Monaco. It’s an honour to be invited on the grounds of my last two years’ results and it’ll be a lifetime ambition achieved.”

Jim went on to say "You have to have a lot of bottle to go through some of those corners at high speed because if you don’t get it right, you are off. To race at Monaco is an honour."

Courtesy of Jeremy Timms' Facebook, we have a picture of Jim in the pit lane, and of another less famous English driver.

The race itself was won by 1989/90 Minardi F1 driver, pasta heir Paolo Barilla, with former Ensign driver Tiff Needell 5th, Fortec boss Richard Dutton 15th, and one-time Monoposto mechanic Richard Eyre 13th.. Jim came 24th in this august company, with an average speed only just below 100mph.

Startline is enormously impressed and wishes to congratulate Jim.
